From Skin Cells to Stem Cells

Researchers at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the Charles C. Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus unveiled a more efficient approach to reprogramming a patient’s skin cells into stem cells.

This promising work builds on the 2006 discovery by Shinya Yamanaka, MD, PhD, who created a method for creating an unlimited source of patient-specific cells suitable for transplantation. At CU, Igor Kogut, PhD, Ganna Bilousova, PhD, and Dennis Roop, PhD, are taking this one step further. Early results from their research suggests that they have developed the most efficient method for producing stem cells.
