Breakthroughs in Orthopedic Treatment and Care

This Transforming Health Care lecture features three top orthopedic innovators who are working on cutting-edge treatments and therapies including life-changing prosthesis implants, spinal surgery procedures, and cartilage regeneration.

Drs. Evalina Burger, Jason Stoneback, and Jason Dragoo will present their work, their in-depth research, and will engage with the audience in an interactive Q&A session on the present and future of orthopedics.

The event will also feature collegiate volleyball athlete Maritza Wiedel and her story going from injury and disk replacement surgery to trekking Everest and becoming an ultra-marathon runner.

As our team continues to push the boundaries of science and medicine, the Transforming Lecture Series is a unique opportunity to hear how tomorrow’s breakthroughs are happening today at CU Anschutz.

Featured Speakers:

Dr. Evalina Burger – Dr. Burger is the Chair of the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Recognized by her peers as one of the best physicians in the country, Dr. Burger is also a prolific author and editor of over 60 peer reviewed publications, several book chapters, and two textbooks. A pioneer in actively researching new alloy compositions to improve orthopedic implants, Dr. Burger’s extensive life experience informs her work – from overcoming her own paralysis to establishing the first fully functional orthopedic clinic in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.

Dr. Jason Stoneback – Dr. Stoneback is the Chief of Orthopedic Trauma and Fracture Surgery at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital, Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and associate professor for the Department of Orthopedics and director of the Limb Restoration Program at UCHealth. Recently, he started one of the first multi-disciplinary osseointegration clinics in the country; a procedure where those experiencing difficulty with traditional prosthesis can opt for a surgical process where a permanent bone-anchored prosthesis is adhered to the patient’s skeleton, improving the quality of life for the patient with longer term comfort, feeling, and mobility.

Dr. Jason Dragoo – Dr. Dragoo’s research focuses on the use of adult stem cells to regenerate cartilage, where he has pioneered new techniques to replace cartilage defects, and methods to accelerate tendon healing by modifying platelet rich plasma. In the operating room, his area of expertise is arthroscopic and reconstructive joint and ligament repair and reconstruction surgery. In addition to this research and practice, Dr. Dragoo specializes in sports medicine, serving as the head team orthopedic physician for the Denver Nuggets and Denver Broncos, as well as a consultant for the US Ski Team.
